McCain Makes His Choice
August 29, 2008
Sen. John McCain finally revealed his choice for V.P. Gov. of Alaska, Sarah Palin. Never heard of her, but in most cases you’ve never heard of the pick for V.P. But from what I’ve heard about her in the past few hours, she’s someone I could support. From small town America, same as me. She’s pro-life. Same as me. Fiscally Conservative. Like me. She’s for more drilling of domestic oil and development of new energy resources. Just like me. She’s a former beauty pageant contestant. Just like me. I was rooting for Lieberman as I think he would have made a good choice, but I think McCain made a savvy move picking Gov. Palin. There are a lot of women who voted for Hillary that feel as though they’ve been dismissed by Obama. While most would probably never vote for McCain, I’m willing to be that some of those 18,000,000 may just cross party lines. While I still don’t support McCain yet, after the coming RNCC I think will have made up my mind as to whether I will support McCain/Palin or whether I will sit this election out. I want to see how she does and what she has to say. Right now though, it’s looking like I may just support the ticket. I’m starting to get a little more energized.

I’m totally energized. The first time I could vote in a presidential race was 1988, and this is the most excited I have ever been about politics.
The pick has caused Obama’s little acceptance speech to be “Obscured By The Clouds”

Ah, good one Teach.

Teach – did Obama give a speech last night?

Andrew Sullivan makes some interesting points about McCain’s choice:

Silke, now that her son is being deployed in next month I’m sure she’s paying damned close attention to the war now.

I’m sure she is, Chris.
You’ve expressed concern about Obama’s lack of experience (which I thought was a valid point). Are you concerned about Palin’s lack of experience?

Not as much, for two reasons.
1) We don’t vote for a Vice President. Yes, I know that she’s “one heartbeat away from the presidency” as all the tv pundits like to say, but McCain would still be president. Still making the decisions.
2) She does have a little more experience than Obama in the fact that being a former mayor and current Governor, all be it for just under two years, she’s had to make actual executive decisions the same way the President has to. Something Obama, Biden nor McCain hasn’t had to do. Plus being the Governor of Alaska, she’s had to deal with her neighbor, Russia, on issues. Yes, they maybe fishing issues, but she’s had to work with a foreign government. So she’s had some, all be it limited, foreign policy experience.
Yes, she is inexperienced, and it does concern me, but I think her background in politics makes her a little more qualified than Obama.

I don’t think that’s correct. Do you have any examples?
You’re right that we don’t vote for a Vice President but I do think it says something about McCain. He believes she is ready to be President at a moment’s notice. This is a man who, if elected, will be the oldest President to hold office. He has dealt with reoccurring skin cancer. McCain’s death is not some highly unlikely hypothetical scenario. You stated yourself you had never heard of her before and yet her lack of experience doesn’t seem to concern you. Interesting.

Silke, Palin still has more experience overall then Obama, yet, she is the VP pick. Biden himself said Obama was not qualified to be president, yet, that is the position Obama is running for.
Beth, I’m not sure if Barry did give a speech. Excitable Andy is doing his best to tell us Barry did, and, Silke actually has the audacity of hope to quote Excitable Andy.

That’s what one of the tv pundiits said when McCain announced her as his VP.

Wow. This hypocrisy is just getting better and better.
Chris, please, please, PLEASE, check your sources, especially if that source is Steve Doocy on Fox & Friends!! This point that you have regurgitated here has since become the laughing stock of the nation. The assertion that Palin has had any foreign policy experience whatsoever because Alaska is in a close proximity to eastern Russia is so patently absurd, I can’t believe you couldn’t see beyond your blind partisanship to sniff that one out. Reeedikooluss!!!!
Palin in no way has more experience than Obama. You must be joking. Obama graduated from Harvard Law School, became President of the Harvard Law Review, worked in the Illinois State Senate for eight years, taught constitutional law for 12 years, and will have served in the U.S. Senate for four years before he became President. Palin has a bachelors degree in journalism, less than two years ago was mayor of a town of about 8,000 people, and has since been governor of the fourth least populated state in our country.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I think it’s great that Palin was chosen, and I’m sure she is a great person, but this talk of her being ready for the Presidency, or especially being more experienced than Obama is ludicrous. Only a few weeks ago, before Obama announced his pick, Karl Rove (Bush’s brain) preemptively derided Tim Kaine as being an unqualified pick for VP. Kaine is much more experienced than Palin.
Seriously, I’m very disappointed in McCain’s pick. This pick was obviously a political ploy to get disgruntled Clinton voters to vote for McCain. For all his talk of being the foreign policy expert and being ready to lead this country, I think choosing Palin brings much of this into question. I would much rather seen him choose someone who was ready to lead the county with him, or even in his place, should that be necessary. Now, he’s negated his own argument against Obama about lack of experience, and potentially handicapped himself with what amounts to a gimmick. Say what you guys think about this pick, but this could be bad for McCain. We’ll soon see what America thinks.

Are you referring to Steve Doocy on Fox and Friends? I’m sorry but the argument that Sarah Palin has more foreign policy and national security experience than Obama because Alaska is close to Russia is ridiculous. You said she has worked with a foreign government. Has she been to Russia? She didn’t even have a passport until July 2007.

I can understand the criticism of Obama that he is young and inexperienced. What I don’t understand is the claim that in terms of foreign policy and national security she has more experience. McCain picked her because she is young and she is a reformer. To pretend otherwise is disingenuous.
