Happy Trek Day

Date May 8, 2009

Star Trek premieres today. I don’t think I’ve looked forward to a movie more than this one. Almost two years since this movie was announced.

I was against it at first. I mean, Star Trek: TOS is an institution around the world. Shatner is Kirk. Nemoy is Spock. Kelly is McCoy. And I felt they shouldn’t do this. But then I saw the first trailer with the Enterprise being build and Nemoy’s voice over with the classic “Space, The Final Frontier”, and now I’m drooling over this movie. Even if the time travel plot is a cheap ploy to change things the way Abrams wants. I won’t go into geek mode and complain about Spock and Uhura’s “relationship” or Kirk driving a car and motorcycle even though such things didn’t exist in the Trek universe anymore or Chekov being on the bridge at the start or Sulu going from Japanese to Korean. Although, there is something to be said about seeing Uhura in her underwear. Can’t complain too much about that. Some purists won’t like it because Trek never really need sex like that to sell, but like Nemoy said, fans need to open their minds and enjoy this movie for the movie. And that’s what I’m going to try and do.

Cause I’ve got faith of the heart
I’m going where my heart will take me
I’ve got faith to believe
I can do anything
I’ve got strength of the soul
And no one’s gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I’ve got faith
Faith of the heart

I don’t go to theaters. Price and crowds, I’m not a crowd person, but I can’t wait for this to come out on DVD. Going to have to get the Super Special Trekker Nerd Edition with collectible Enterprise toy that’ll end up costing $60+. Saving up already.

That’s why I’m here. See, you’re the boss lady who cracks the whip, Silke’s the serious one and I’m the comic relief.

I can’t see it in the theater, but I am eager to see it when it comes out on DVD or Cable….

I saw it Friday. Excellent. Give it a B because it uses some of that shaky camera work so prevalent in movies nowadays and something to do with “using cadets.” I’ll leave it there, so as to not give spoilers.

For the diehards, they probably saw the beginning and said “WTF? This is not the way the history of ST goes!” That is addressed, though, again, I won’t leave spoilers.
