Memorial Day

Date May 25, 2009

I don’t know how my post turned into a poem. Excuse me if it is not perfect, but this is how it came out. As for the tattoo pictures, these are living memorials I have photographed that seemed fitting for today’s post. Whatever you do today, please stop and remember why we have Memorial Day. Please don’t wish anyone a happy Memorial Day, but do enjoy your day as heroes sacrificed so you could.

Memorial Day by Greta Perry

With time off from work and the beach calls your name
Many gather with friends and family to grill over open flame.

As Americans we we should not just look at it as extra time to play
Please don’t forget the true meaning of Memorial Day.

This day has been set aside to stop and pay tribute
To our fallen heroes and warriors who gave a final salute.

Please stop while enjoying your day and please pay some respect
To those who passed before their time; dying to protect.

We may have lost them yesterday; our nation’s history
But we should never forget that freedom is not free.

On this day each American should stop and pause
To honor the memories of brave heroes who have died for a cause.

If you do nothing today but stare at the waving red white and blue
Please think of the last moments that one of these heroes went through.

    Great poem, Greta.

    Chris, love the flag!

Today, my heart is both heavy with grief but also full of gratitude for all those soldiers who have given their life for this country. Words truly fail…

There is not to reason why
There is only to do and die
Fighting for whats right fighting to be free
Fighting for the thing we call democracy
For my brother who fought for what he belived
He is truly a soldier of the Army
I can still here him sing hooah
    “hooooahhh hoooahhh”
A song he sang so sure he would make it
To me he is a hero
He made it on our wall, a plastic star with his name
He will never be talked about with shame
He gave the Army his life
But left our family with grief and strife
I am not sad but proud
My brother was part of that Army crowd

Greta, I love the poem and with your permission I would love to post it to my Facebook page. I was looking for something to explain to people why I don’t like them to say “Happy Memorial Day”
    Bless you and yours
    Sheri
