Star Trek

Date November 20, 2009

I finally got to watch Star Trek last night. A movie that I had been waiting to see for almost two years. And I’ll say it right off the bat, J.J. Abrams nailed it. He got it right. It was the best ST movie since ST IV: Save The Whales, I mean The Voyage Home. It looked so real. Like that’s how the future could actually look. The massive scale of everything. Nero’s ship, the Enterprise engine room, Big Red on Delta Vega. Even the bridge of the Enterprise with it’s complete opposite look from the original. The first scene on the bridge, and I didn’t even notice it. It looked like it just was supposed to look like that. Like that’s how it always looked. The new look of the Phasers and transport effect. I don’t even know how to describe how cool they were. The casting was superb. Eric Bana’s Nero was the 2nd best Trek villain of all time. Khan being first, obviously. Chris Pine was the best choice to play Kirk. Brash, cocky, arrogant, strong, gung-ho. Zachary Quinto’s Spock worked so well. Though, he should have lowered his voice a little. It was a little too high for me. But Karl Urban was the best. He was “Bones”. There were a few times when I swore it was Deforest Kelly it was so good. Especially the first scene of him and Kirk on the shuttle.

Now for the elephant in the room. WARNING: Spoiler Alert. Highlight To Read. They didn’t fix the time line. WTF? After everything that happened in this movie it’s like the events of TOS, TNG, DS9 & VOY never happened. Can we really call this movie part of ST canon? Vulcan is destroyed making the Vulcan’s an endangered species, Kirk’s dad dies and Cpt. Pine is fine. Although what happened to him could have happened at a later date. Maybe they’ll fix it in the sequel, I don’t know. Other things I have a gripe about. Enterprise had already established that cars didn’t exist in the future, yet Kirk’s dad had one and Kirk himself had a motorcycle. Spock and Uhura had, what appeared to be, a sexual relationship? I can’t swallow that one. Sorry. Spoiler Alert Over. And there weren’t enough extras on the 2 disk DVD set. Damn Blu-Ray got all of them. But all in all, it was a great movie. If you’ve never watched Trek, you can come into this movie and enjoy it. It’s a great action movie that just happens to be set in the Trek universe. The only way it could have been better was if I had an HDTV and surround sound.

What? You didn’t see it in the theater? Figured you would have been there on day one.

Yeah, the time line thing looks like it didn’t make sense, but, watch it again. The beginning originally threw me for a loop, being totally against everything in all the ST TV shows, movies, and books. But, what they did was create a completely alternate time line for this Star Trek, which will allow for different movies, rather than following the original time line.

About 2/3 of the way through, if memory serves, you’ll get the explanation about creating a new time line.

I get all that. But it’s an alternate time line, not parallel. Which means it is now the set time line. You can’t have two different time lines of events set in the same universe. You can’t have Kirk’s dad die the day he was born in one time line and in another, that’s also happening that’s also happening at the same time, have him see him promoted to Captain. It’s some sort of paradox or something. Doc Brown could explain it better than me. If it had been set in a parallel universe, or something, it would make a little more sense. But it doesn’t take away from the badassness of the movie. The movie is so believable that you forgive these sort of things. Sorry, Greta. I know Trek give you that glassy eyed look. Especially when we start talking like this. And I don’t go to theaters. Too damned expensive and too many people.

I am a big Star Trek fan and I really enjoyed this movie. I’m glad you did too, Chris. I know how much you were looking forward to it.

Basically, it was a time split. The Romulans coming back caused a split, so, in one line, you get the old Trek. In another line, a new Trek.

Some of the stuff was silly, though. Having all those cadets suddenly in charge and going on the ships? What, do they have no one else in Star Fleet? And Kirk being named captain at the end? Um, ah, no.

Watched it again yesterday and I may watch it again tomorrow. Never done that with any other movie before. Not even Star Wars. Anyone notice R2D2 in the debris around Vulcan?

Silke, I’m a total Trek whore. They’ve already announced they’re making a sequel due out sometime in 2011. Already counting the days.

Teach, two different time lines can’t exist together. It makes no since. I still think it was a cop out, but one I can forgive.

Oh, it was a cop out, a way of starting fresh. There is way too much material, too many tv shows, movies, and, hundreds of books, and now they can pretty much ignore it all and do more movies.

There is a theory, and not just scifi, that there are infinite possibilities from any instance. Do you decide to go left or right? You now have created two time lines. That’s what I mean. You could also look at it as if the whole time line was changed at that point when the Romulan ship came through. Theoretical. Viva la more Trek’s!
