Major C. in Afghanistan
April 6, 2006
A friend of mine just e-mailed me this from Afghanistan. Yes it is authentic Jake!
I’m stationed in the eastern part of Afghanistan near the Pakistani border, Taliban country. Tonight one of our afghan guards, who live in a nearby village came back to the camp to report that his house was attacked by small arms fire by the Taliban. He was shook up, left his father, wife and children to defend his home while he came and got more rounds. We couldn’t go out to help him. Tomorrow is their holiday (Friday, like our Sunday). The attackers scattered, and will probably hit again. He was attacked most likely in retaliation to his association with working for the coalition. Yes, the Taliban is still active. What you don’t hear much in the media is the Iraqi and Afghani side of the story. Yes, I was there in OIF 1 when the media reported from their hotel rooms. Now, I’m in Afghanistan where there’s hardly any media (thank goodness).
Yes, we’re rebuilding and there are sacrifices to be made. The kids, God love them, are not afraid to come to us, same as in Iraq. As in Iraq, those who help us are targeted. Unheralded quiet courage.

What a horrible story. When is the Taliban going to realize that it’s over? They need to give up. Oh and why can’t we attack them on Friday? I don’t care who’s holy day it is; this is a war not a tea party.
I feel so badly for any children that have to grow up with war all around them like that.

What many people do not seem to realise is that the government in Afghanistan is abundant with ex-war lords and ex-taliban. Afghanistan is just another example of patch-work temporary solutions, just waiting to erupt again.

Carnival of Blue Stars #9…
I hope that we will make sure these stories get told and ‘make the roundsÂ’. Our heros deserve better than what they are getting and itÂ’s up to us to make sure their stories are told. The MSM doesnÂ’t seem interested unless it makes our Soldiers look b…..
